Bloomsburg Goes 2-1 at Purdue Duals
BLOOMSBURG-The Bloomsburg University wrestling team finished 2-1 at the Purdue Duals on Saturday, recording wins over William Penn and Eastern Michigan University. Bloomsburg's loss came to host-Purdue, putting the Huskies at 5-2 on the season.
In their first match, the Huskies fell to Purdue, 21-15. Mike Sees (Northumberland/Shikellamy) got the Huskies off to a 4-0 lead with a major decision win over Brandon Tucker at 125 pounds. Ricky Donald (Milton/Bloomsburg) put another five points on the board for Bloomsburg, getting a 17-0 technical fall win for the Huskies at 133 pounds.
After losses at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively, Aric Fuhrman (Spring Grove/Delone Catholic), at 157 pounds, got a 5-1 win for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies' final win of the match-up came at the heavyweight position as Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) got a 6-3 decision win over the Boilermakers' Aaron Kepugh.
In their second dual match of the day, the Huskies defeated William Penn, 32-7. Going into the duals, William Penn had recorded 54 straight wins dating back to 2001. The streak was broken in the team's first match of the day in a 22-21 loss to the University of Indianapolis.
Justin Thomas (Hunlock Creek/Benton) got the Huskies off to a strong start with an 8-2 decision win at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, Donald recorded his second win of the day with a 12-2 major decision over the Statesmen's Dustin Howa. Furhman recorded another win at 157 pounds with a 5-2 decision win, while at the 165-pound weight class Jason Crawford (New Albany/Wyalusing Valley) got a win by forfeit.
At the 174-pound bout, Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) won a tight 2-1 decision over Omar Ortiz, while Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) got a win at 184 pounds in a 10-2 major decision.
Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin) recorded his first win of the day with a win against Jay Thomas at the 1:44 mark of the 197-pound bout. Spaid, at heavyweight, recorded his second win of the duals with an 8-5 win over William Penn's Chauncey Coleman.
Bloomsburg closed out the duals with a 21-13 win over Eastern Michigan University.
Donald recorded another win at 133 pounds with a 5-0 decision win over Chris Jenkins, while at 149 pounds, Hickman picked up his second win of the day in an 8-3 win over Eastern Michigan's Ryan Furniss.
Frank Beasley (Odin, IL/Centralia) picked up his first win at the duals with a pin against the Eagles' R.J. Pratt at the 4:59 mark.
Bloomsburg picked up three more wins late in the match as Shirk, Hasseman and Spaid all won their respective bouts.
At the 184-pound bout, Shirk got an 8-1 win, while at 197 pounds, Hasseman won in a 10-1 major decision. Spaid finished out the day with an 8-3 decision win for Bloomsburg.
The Huskies will be idle until Jan. 2 when they travel to Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers at 7:00 p.m.
